The help to beat the clock
THE DOC AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
- Measures the vital signs of the victim
- Calculates the charge necessary for the individual
- Delivers the charge to correct the rhythm of the heart
- Can be used by anyone, even non-medially trained personnel
- Improves the survival rate by up to 74%
When do you need an AED?
In the event of a heart attack, blood supply to the heart is suddenly reduced dramatically or stopped, usually by a blood clot. During this episode ventricular fibrillation sometimes occurs. This is when there is un-coordinated contraction of the cardiac muscles of the ventricles in the heart; they quiver rather than contracting properly. Ventricular fibrillation is the most commonly identified arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) in cardiac arrest patients.
If the rhythm is not corrected swiftly it can accelerate and eventually goes into a kind of spasm before stopping beating this is known as cardiac arrest. If a person is not treated within 5 minutes, even if they survive they may suffer brain damage from the lack of oxygen for the protracted period.
An AED corrects the rhythm of the heart, re-booting it if you like. Sticky sensors are attached to the victim’s chest. The electrodes send information about the person’s heart rhythm to a computer in the AED which analyses if a shock is required. If fibrillation is taking place the AED will deliver the correct amount of charge to try to correct the rhythm of the heart.
In combination with CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) an AED gives the best chance for a lay person to help a victim of cardiac arrest until a trained medical professional arrives.
